New Year, New Me

Writer: Amy MoAmy Mo

2023 was rough. I’m not kidding. I faced some of the hardest challenges in my life. From personal trials of friendships, romance, and academics to societal tribulations of structural inequalities and discrimination, I honestly didn’t know if I would make it. But in my darkest moments, when I felt the world closing around me, one thing remained my steadfast companion: music. Music was with me when I slammed the door, cried out in frustration, and cursed while I stared at the blank essay paper and watched the clock tick closer and faster to the deadline. Music was with me when I felt betrayed, when I questioned my worth, when I was left out, and when I was disappointed. Suffice it to say, my musical companion is an unjudgemental, understanding friend who supported me through the highs and lows.

I began my musical journey with the GuZheng (Chinese Harp) when I was five. As cliche as it sounds, I immediately fell in love with the instrument. Playing GuZheng is a gateway to a realm where the strings weaves a tapestry of emotions. As my fingers dance across the strings, I am transported to a serene landscape, where the music becomes a gentle breeze carrying whispers of ancient melodies. Even after moving to Canada from China, I continued to play GuZheng to connect with my culture. Also, I have collaborated with Western musicians to share my culture and connect with others through music. I continued my musical journey by learning piano and singing, which I enjoyed as I found them to be an extension of myself and my emotions.

When I entered high school, my stress level rose as I faced increased pressure and expectations. One day, as a completely spontaneous decision, I began listening to music while doing homework. I found it very calming and soothing. Thus, I started listening to different genres of music while I did everything, from working out to falling asleep at night. Soon, I realized how wonderful it felt listening to music, playing my instruments, and singing. So I wondered, what about music that makes it so universal and powerful? So, I began my research and exploration and discovered some fascinating information.

On January 1st, 2024, I made a new year resolution: I will create a blog documenting my personal musical journeys, sharing my discoveries and music with others, especially teens who might be going through a similar experience. I hope my content will help soothe one’s anxiety and offer a companion during difficult times. Also, the forum and chat on the website are portals to connect with others from around the world who might also be facing challenges. We are a global community that supports each other, and I hope this blog connects us. Although I am not a medical professional, and my content should not replace advice and treatments from your medical provider, I am a fellow music enthusiast who loves to share her journey with you. So come along as we grow and venture together!
